Five Thoughts: Wagner (SD) at Hanson (SD)

1) Two highly regarded teams in Class A in South Dakota heading into the game. Wagner would get the 60-38 win on the road. The biggest difference in the game was Wagner's clear size advantage and ability to control the interior. Offensively they could work inside-out and by collapsing Hanson's defense they were able to hit 9 times from the arc. Conversely Hanson hit just once from deep as the Wagner defense was able to lock up on ball knowing they had rim protection and control of the defensive glass behind them. Quality win for Wagner.

2) Ashlyn Koupal (6'3" 2026 Guard/Forward) has garnered a lot of Division I interest throughout the Midwest, but I would expect those opportunities to continue to grow nationally. Her height/length make her a difficult player to defend, and she's shown nice touch around the hoop and into the mid-range game, including a couple of jumpers from the free throw line where she simply elevated over her defender for clean looks. Finished with an efficient 13 points, but really owned the glass on the interior in traffic.

3) The biggest beneficiary of the Wagner size advantage inside may have been Lydia Yost (5'9" 2025 Guard/Forward). 12 of her 15 points came from beyond the arc, primarily on kick-outs. Did a nice job getting feet and hands prepped, ready for looks to come back out from the paint. Sprayed triples from both wings, the top and the right corner. Excellent shooter off of catch and shoot play.

4) Macy Koupal (5'9" 2024 Guard/Forward) finished with a game-high 16 points for Wagner. Committed to Dordt and incredibly steady production. Flashed shooting range from top and left wing. I liked that she showed scoring from all 3 levels. A lot of options in her scoring tool box, mid-range jumper, short interior drives, smooth in transition, very well-rounded offensive arsenal. Could end up being a real steal for Dordt, she's very polished.

5) Tough night for Hanson, as Wagner eventually pulled away. One of the bright spots for the program is Taziah Hawkins (5'7" 2026 Guard). I've had the chance to see Hawkins play quite a bit. Has the skills to work as true Point Guard or true Shooting Guard, she's developed the skill set to make either a viable college option. There wasn't much available in the paint, but Hawkins wasn't scared to take on contact on drives, getting 4 of her 9 points from the line. She's a legitimate sniper, she excels on the catch and shoot and can pull up from the arc at full speed and deliver as well. Keep tabs on this extremely talented young Guard.
