In the first game of the Battle of the Best event in Des Moines, it was Pure Prep 2023 opening with a 65-39 win over Missouri Phenom KC 2023 Johnson with four players each recording 12 points: Katy Reyerson, Nicole Storck, Stella Charleston and MaKayla Boatman.
It was Phenom who'd open the game with an early 9-5 lead. A drive by LaKorria Brown opened things for Phenom, but was countered by an offensive rebound and finish from Storck. A pair of free throws by A'Myah Bankston and a steal and score by Brown made it 6-2 Phenom. Stella Charlston, one of the best shooters in the region, cut it 6-5 with a triple out of the left corner. Gladys Brown would strike for the next three points on a free throw, and later an offensive rebound for a 9-5 Phenom advantage. Brown would finish with 9 points and 6 rebounds.
Pure Prep would counter with what would essentially be a knock-out blow, a remarkable 24-0 run that turned a 9-5 deficit into a 29-9 lead.
The burst started with a three off the right wing by Presley Blommers (5'6" 2023, Oskaloosa HS, IA), the first of three from the arc by Blommers in the game. A transition and 1 by Boatman gave Pure Prep the lead at 11-9, and was quickly followed by another transtion and 1, this time by Northern Iowa commit Katy Reyerson to make it 14-9. Reyerson would end the game with a double-double of 12 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
The lead kept extending on an offensive rebound by Rebecca Aagard (6'2" 2025, North Polk HS, IA), and a pair of scores by Storck, first on a steal and score, then a right corner three made it 21-9.
The run was far from over though. A well-executed free throw line down drive by Reyerson extended it to 23-9, and a pair of threes, first from Storck (left wing), then by Blommers (left lane extended) rounded out the run, leaving it at 29-9 Pure Prep.
A much needed three from LaKorria Brown, off the right wing, would finally end the Phenom drought. She would finish with a game-high 19 points. Boatman immediately answered with her own three for Pure Prep, off the left side, making it 32-12. A long jumper from Phenom's Sydney Reeve cut it to 32-14, but as they would do all game long, Pure Prep answered, with a layup from Aagard, and a corner three from the right by Blommers, her third of the half, made it 37-14 Pure Prep.
The teams would exchange late first half scores: a free throw for Phenom's Tajanique Carter, another offensive board and score by Pure Prep's Storck, and a right wing three by Phenom's LaKorria Brown left Pure Prep up 39-18 at the half.
Pure Prep opened the 2nd with an offensive put-back from Reyerson. Phenom would answer with a baseline drive via Gladys Brown. A free throw for Storck made it 42-20, before a drive from Gladys Brown of Phenom. Reyerson cashed in an and 1 long drive, then on the next possession an offensive rebound finish, the fifth of the game for Pure Prep, but Phenom drew up their own three point play, with LaKorria Brown hitting off the right wing, cutting the deficit to 47-25.
The teams would continue to trade hoops in the 2nd half. Pure Prep's Boatman connected on a baseline jumper, a steal led to a score by Phenom's Gladys Brown, Charleston of Pure Prep banged home a left wing three, among her four hits from the arc in the game, LaKorria Brown countered with a long drive, but Charleston quickly snapped down another three, this time from the left lane extended, to make it 55-29 Pure Prep.
It would have been easy throughout the half for Phenom to get frustrated and not keep battling, but that was certainly not the case. Another long drive by LaKorria Brown and free throws by Carter and Gladys Brown were answered, as always, by baskets from Pure Prep leaving it 59-32.
Phenom couldn't get on any significant runs. a Gladys Brown free throw was countered with two free throws from Storck. A layup from ArKeisha Hines was followed by a pair of drives for LaKorria Brown, but Pure Phenom closed the scoring with a left wing three by Charleston and a free throw by Boatman to end the game at 65-39.
MaKayla Boatman, Pure Prep 2023
-Boatman was one of four Pure Prep players to reach double-figures, scoring 12 points. Colorado Christian commit. Able to be a dual-threat scorer using drives and jumpers in unison. Connected twice from the arc off the left wing, and is a consistent three point threat. Flashed a smooth jumper off the baseline as well as another score in transition game. She's steady in her production, and leading returning scorer on what should be a very strong North Polk High School team.
LaKorria Brown, Missouri Phenom KC 2023 Johnson
-Tough game for Phenom, but Brown was outstanding, pouring in a game-high 19 points, including connecting three times from the arc. All of her threes were off the right wing, where she looked very comfortable and showed a consistent stroke. The majority of her scoring came off the bounce. She converts drives from 1 or 2 dribble quick attacks, to full length drives off the edges and in the transition game. Despite being a bit on the smaller side, she showed she can score consistently against quality Guards.
Stella Charleston, Pure Prep 2023
-Charleston is definitely a sniper. Scores the majority of her points from the arc, whether off the wings or the corners, both of which she is a strong catch & shoot weapon. Great recruit at the Division II/NAIA levels. She's a proven shooter who shoots it at a high percentage clip. Part of a talented Southeast Polk lineup, where she averaged 11 PPG during her Junior campaign. She knows how to play and relocate around the arc off of post feeds and dribble drive attacks. Wouldn't be surprised to see her take a big step forward in recruiting with continued strong play in July.
Katy Reyerson, Pure Prep 2023
-The Northern Iowa commit was outstanding in this game, finishing with a big double-double of 12 points and game-high 14 rebounds. Although she can certainly score and rebound inside, including a pair of offensive rebound put-backs for scores, she was excellent facing the bucket. Scored in transition, a nice free throw line one-dribble finish, and a longer drive off the wing. She is coming off a monster Junior year at West Marshall where she averaged 20 points & 12 rebounds. She may end up proving to be one of the steals of the 2023 recruiting class in the region.
Nicole Storck, Pure Prep 2023
-It's pretty uncommon to find 5'10" players who are capable of consistent double-double production, but Storck is one of those exceptions. She finished with 12 points & 10 rebounds. A quick check of her High School season shows this is the norm, as she averaged 14 PPG and 8 RPG as a Junior. Has snuck under the radar a bit in recruiting, but with great production off the wing and a strong club season into her Senior year that could change quickly. Great fit at High DII/NAIA levels. Hard to find players off the edge who can score from the arc, off the bounce and on the offensive glass.
