Despite a huge late rally by 1on1 2023/2024 Maroon, it was Wisconsin Impact 2024 Mackowski holding on for a 45-37 win at the Cheesehead Challenge.
Although late in the game Impact would hold on to the lead by a thread, they never trailed in this game after coming out of the blocks with an 11-1 opening rampage.
It started with an interior drive by Jasmine Delaney. A free throw from Dana McFarlane (6'1" 2024, Dominican HS, WI) made it 3-0, then a pair of buckets from Kyana Aguilera, who would finish with 9, made it 7-0 as she converted an offensive put-back and a long drive. A free throw from Amelia Rigel (5'6" 2024, Brookfield Academy HS, WI) stopped the bleeding temporarily at 7-1, but a wing drive from Nora Wendorff and an offensive board for Josi Matel propped the lead to 11-1.
To their credit, the best run of the game from 1on1 Milwaukee would ensue, a 13-3 push that knotted the game for the only time at 14. A three from Taya Christianson (5'7" 2023, Catholic Memorial HS, WI) started things and a free throw from Noel Greene (5'6" 2023, Wisconsin Lutheran HS, WI) cut the gap to 6 before a short drive by Impact's McFarlane made it 13-5. The run would continue however as Christianson connected from downtown on the right wing. A single free throw for Impact's Aguilera was answered with 6 quick 1on1 points: a 15 foot jumper from Jada Aliesa, and two free throws each from Fini Bartolotti and Lily Schmidt ultimately knotted things at 14.
The biggest run in this one was before half-time, as Impact regrouped and went on a 9-0 spree that would never be countered. It started and ended with threes from Wendorff (left wing) and Matel (right lane extended) sandwiching an in-bounds layup & later a free throw by McFarlane. That run brought us to half with Impact on top 23-14.
It looked briefly like 1on1 might start another push when Schmidt delivered a three from the top, but Impact responded with the next 9 points. This run started with a Wendorff drive, then a straight away three from Matel, a middle drive from Aguilera and finally concluded with a sweet back-cut for a score from Delaney, leaving it 32-17.
It didn't look like it at the time, but 1on1 had a lot of time left and chipped and chipped and chipped away at the deifict.
A three off the right wing by Cat Holmes (5'5" 2024, Brookfield East HS, WI) made it 32-20, but was offset by a Delaney baseline drive for Impact. The momentum felt like it was shifting a bit on a stolen outlet pass that led to a lay-up and 1 finish (and conversion) from 1on1s Schmidt. She would later a a single free throw on the following possession to bring 1on1 within 34-24.
Impact scored next on a transition bucket from Wendorff, but 1on1 crept 1 point close with a three pointer. The last double-digit lead of the game for Impact came at 38-27 on a layup from McFarlane.
Things got really close, really quickly as 1on1 made a final charge, an impressive 10-0 run late to claw within 38-37. It started at the stripe with two freebies for Schmidt, would decrease to 7 on a baseline drive by Reagan Luell (5'6" 2024, Oak Creek HS, WI), to 6 on a Anna Reimers free throw, to 4 on an inside move from Aliesa, and REAL interesting at 38-37 when Luell ended the run with a left wing three.
You have to give a TON of credit to Impact for not losing their composure. The biggest basket of the game belonged to Impact as Wendorff delivered a monster three off the right wing. A steal and score from Maddie Haubrich (5'4" 2024, Westosha Central HS, WI) broke the hearts of 1on1 who had rallied so valiantly. Another stop and two icing free throws via Aguilera closed the game, with Impact picking up the 45-37 victory.
Kyana Aguilera, Wisconsin Impact 2024 Mackowski
-Finished with a very sound 9 points/6 rebound performance in win over 1on1 Milwaukee. Rebounds extremely well from her Guard spot at 5'8". Most of her offensive production came off the bounce, with scoring drives off the wing and down the middle from the top of the key. Led St Francis in scoring at better than 15 PPG, but probably more impressive was her 10.3 RPG, a remarkable number for a Guard. Has a lot of strength that she knows how to leverage on drives and on the glass and converted one of her offensive rebounds into a score in this one as well.
Josi Matel, Wisconsin Impact 2024 Mackowski
-Near double-double production in win over 1on1 Milwaukee from Matel, who had 8 points & tied for game-high rebounding honors with 9. Her game translates to that of a Small Forward at the college level with her combination of solid height and ability to stretch the floor from three, where she hit twice, both from near the top of the key. Was impressed with her energy on the offensive glass, she'll compete in traffic and converted one board into a score.
Dana McFarlane, Wisconsin Impact 2024 Mackowski
-Tallied 8 points and 4 rebounds in the win. Did most of her damage inside the paint, where she was able to convert a pair of lay-up finishes and also get inside on a short drive for a third finish. Has good size at 6'1" and will compete on the interior. Saw significant minutes last season at Dominican and will be interesting to see how far she can expand her game during her Junior season. Coaches are always seeking out height, and McFarlane has a good build with a lot of potential for growth.
Anna Reimers, 1on1 Milwaukee 2023/2024 Maroon
-Reimers had 4 points but also really hit the glass on her way to a game-best 9 rebound effort. Listed at just 5'5" Reimers has a nose for the ball and tracks it well. Showed some three point range when she connected off the wing. Had a solid Sophomore campaign at Whitefish Bay at 5 PPG. Comfortable playing in an up-tempo game, either off the wing or with the ball in her hands. Would look for a steady rise in her production during her Junior season. Lanky Guard who is comfortable at either Guard spot.
Lily Schmidt, 1on1 Milwaukee 2023/2024 Maroon
-Posted a team-best 11 points while adding 4 rebounds. Did the majority of her scoring by earning trips to the free throw line, where she converted 6 times. Willing to absorb contact on the move and did a nice job of beating initial defender off the bounce. Ability showed to stretch out defenses with a triple from the top of the key. Going into Junior season with State Champion Kettle Moraine program.
Nora Wendorff, Wisconsin Impact 2024 Mackowski
-Very sound scorer who finished with 12 points, connecting twice from the 3 point line. Her three pointers came from either wing, and were sprinkled around a trio of drives. She scored on drives off the wing twice and added another in the transition game. Will be leaned on heavily this High School season as her teams leading returning scorer at 7PPG. It will be a great opportunity to showcase a very nice scoring ability that she possesses. Don't be surprised to see her take a big step forward in recruiting profile this winter.
