Game Summary

In a back and forth battle, one of the best game of the weekend at the Cheesehead Challenge, 1on1 Milwaukee 2023 Silver would get the last 4 points, and that was the difference in a 51-47 win over Wisconsin Elite 2023 Johnson.

The 1st half would play out pretty even, until 1on1 Milwaukee had a late flurry for a 26-16 half-time lead. 1on1 opened things with a transition bucket from Faith Robertson, one of the best perimeter players of the weekend, and a quick 2-0 lead. Camryn Nies, who would end the game with a game-high 13 points, would connect off the right wing from the arc for the 1st Wisconsin Elite lead at 3-2. A middle drive from Olivia Close was followed by another Robertson transition score and a 6-3 1on1 lead, but that was short-lived as Nies connected again, this time for three off the left wing to knot things at 6.

The next 3 points for Elite came via free throws, 2 from Lindsey Schadewalt (5'10" 2024, New Glarus HS, WI), a scholarship level talent who's a sniper off the wings, and a 3rd by Jordy Buwalda, one of the top post prospects regionally in 2023 class, made it 9-6. 1on1 responded with 5 points of their own for an 11-9 advantage. Sammi Glatczak (5'8" 2023, Greendale HS, WI) cashed a 3 off the left wing, and a well-executed roll to the hoop off screen/roll action led to a bucket by Reenie Ganzer (5'10" 2023, Pius XI Catholic HS, WI).

The last lead of the 1st half for Elite came at 12-11 off a transition bucket from Buwalda. A long jumper off the right wing for Robertson and a converted offensive board by Ayianna Johnson, the 1st of 4 offensive rebound put-backs for her in the game extended it to 15-12 1on1. Two free throws from Nies made it 15-14, but Johnson, who holds Division I offers, crashed the glass again to make it 17-14. The final points of the half for Elite came off a smooth baseline runner from Schadewalt cutting the deficit to just 1 at 17-16.

The final 9 points of the half went to 1on1 Milwaukee, ending the half with a huge flurry. It started with a fast break score from Ava Westermann (5'5" 2023, Pewaukee HS, WI), followed by a left block finish from Johnson, a nice turn-around free throw line jumper from Ally Rhyner and ended with a triple off the left wing off the hands of Close.

After a bad finish to the 1st half allowing the last 9 points to go to 1on1, Elite came out flying in the 2nd half, jumping into the lead with a 10-0 push to start the half. A dive to the bucket from Maggie Hartwig was her 1st score, but she would end the game with 9 second half points. The first of 3 second half threes from Ashlyn Knapp made it 26-21. Hartwig got to the line for a pair of freebies, and Knapp ended the run with a straight away 3 as the duo capped their 10-0 run with the game tied at 26.

In a game of runs, 1on1 answered the Elite attack, with a 7-0 surge of their own and a 33-26 advantage. A baseline drive and 1 from Jenna Tierney (5'9" 2023, South Milwaukee HS, WI) ended the bleeding and reclaimed the lead at 29-26. Johnson, a menace on the offensive glass, converted another o board for a hoop making it 31-26 and a steal and score from Westermann capped the run.

An and 1 finish from Lainee Burks shifted momentum back to Elite. A transition score from 1on1s from Rhyner made it 35-29 1on1, before a pair of free throws from Jessi Ernst cut the lead back to 4.

The biggest lead either team would have again would be at 39-31 1on1 after a pair of scores: Tierney off the right block and Robertson on the break.

The teams would trade points, but Elite would gradually chip away at the lead. A big three from Knapp from the right side made it 39-34, but was matched by 1on1s Rhyner from the right lane extended, pushing the lead back to 8.

The most critical run of the game for Elite came at this point, cashing in 7 straight to pull within 1. Another three, this one from Nies off the left wing was followed by an offensive second-chance score from Hartwig and a jumper from Schadewalt pulled Elite within 42-41.

Off a miss, Johnson had her biggest offensive board and score, making it 44-41 1on1 before a free throw from Buwalda cut it to 44-42.

A fantastic drive with an and 1 finish by Robertson made it 47-42 1on1. Three free throws in four tries from Hartwig cut the gap to 2 and we were knotted late at 47 on a baseline runner from Nies.

The last field goal of the game, and is it turned out, the game-winner, came on a drive and pull-up jumper from 1on1s Tierney. After a defensive stop, the games final points, and game-clinching free throws came from Westermann and secured the 51-47 win for 1on1 Milwaukee 2023 Silver.

Prospect Notes

Jorey Buwalda, Wisconsin Elite 2023 Johnson

-Buwalda is one of the top 2023 post prospects in Wisconsin. Always strong on the glass, and although she uses her strength inside to finish or get to the line, she is more than capable of facing the basket with mid-range and three-point shooting. Division I prospect with strong frame. Finished with 5 points & 9 rebounds in this game, often going head to head with fellow DI prospect Johnson. Has court vision and adept passing skills out of the post, adding another dimension to her game. One of the better post prospects I've evaluated during this current club season.

Maggie Hartwig, Wisconsin Elite 2023 Johnson

-Scholarship level prospect had a strong game against 1on1 Milwaukee with near double-double game of 9 points/9 rebounds. The Forward showed well on the boards, including an offensive put-back. The bulk of her scoring came from the charity stripe, where she had 5 of her 9 points, showing a willingness to take on contact whether in the paint or via short attacks to the rim. Led her Sauk Prairie team in scoring last season at 12 PPG. Will be able to work from either the Small Forward or as a perimeter Power Forward at the collegiate level.

Ayianna Johnson, 1on1 Milwaukee 2023 Silver

-Another strong showing for the Division I prospect, who tallied 10 points & 7 boards. Finished in double-figures despite not getting a lot of plays run for her. Actually scored 8 of her 10 points off of offensive rebounds, where she is one of the best in the region, using length, quick hops and physicality to track the board. Although she has DI offers, she is still open in the recruiting process and with her size (a legitimate 6'3) and ability to score consistently off the low block on either side and rebound at a high volume, should draw the eyes of more Division I programs in July.

Camryn Nies, Wisconsin Elite 2023 Johnson

-Some college is going to get a steal in Nies. She's a proven scorer at Platteville (15 PPG) and finished with 13 points (including 3-3s) and 3 rebounds in the game. Prolific shooter from the arc who connected from both wings. Has good size for a Guard and should be able to play collegiately at the Shooting Guard or 3 Guard/Small Forward position. Had the biggest shot of the game for Elite, connecting on a runner to tie game at 47 late.

Faith Robertson, 1on1 Milwaukee 2023 Silver

-One of the wings I was most impressed with over the course of the Cheesehead Challenge, she was consistent getting to the rim from the wing, and rebounds her position at a plus level. Has some natural bounce in her step on the move. Had team-best 11 points and added 3 boards against Elite. She is terrific in space and into the transition game, proving difficult to keep in front of by opposing defenders. Although she is strongest off the bounce did connect on a long jumper when she was given too much cushion. Potential scholarship talent who could get looks in July teaming with Johnson.
