A strong first half propelled Wisconsin Impact 2024 Kelley past CY Select Wolves 2023 en route to their 51-36 victory.
CY Select, playing the weekend without Audi Crooks, an Iowa State commit, adjusted their style from inside/out to more of a transition and dribble drive attack through the weekend. They opened with the 1st score, but unfortunately, it was one of just two leads they had in the game at 2-0.
Impact would go on a 9-1 run for a 9-3 lead that they would never relinquish. They entered the game short-handed with some injury issues, which only grew during this game. A dive to the rim and score from Gracie Gopalan tied it at 2, before a free throw from Molly Joyce gave CY Select their last lead at 3-2. The next 7 went to Impact. A Gopalan triple off the left wing made it 5-3, and a transition score from Lauren Capstran off a feed fronm Gopalan was followed with an interior isolation finish from Gabby Wilke to make it 9-3. Unfortunately, it was the only score for Wilke, who would get injured a few minutes later, and sat out rest of the game as a precautionary move.
The teams exchanged scored, starting with some free throws. CY Select's Averi Porter made it 9-4, before a pair of freebies from Capstran extended the lead back to 9 for Impact. An inside bucket from CY Select's Kenna Mongan (5'6" 2023, Cherokee Washington HS, IA) cut it to 11-6 before the next Impact run.
A 9-0 burst for Impact made it 20-6 and they would never look back. A transition bucket, followed by a transition and 1 finish, both from Kennedy Retherford (5'9" 2025, Pewaukee HS, WI) expanded the lead to 16-6. A drive and finish by Tess Wiczek and a layup by Capstran on a nice feed from Gopalan ended the run.
CY Select would have their only significant run of the half, a Joyce fueled 6-1 run to make it 21-12. She started it with a left wing three, was temporarily interrupted by a free throw from Shae Kelley, and finished by run with another triple off the left wing, 6 of her game-high 21 points.
Impact made their statement immediately after, ending the first half with an 11-0 run and a 32-12 halftime lead. It started with a Gopalan three off the left wing, then a transition and 1 on a feed from Wiczek to Kelley, another Impact three, this one from Capstran, and ended with a long drive from Gopalan.
The 2nd half brought much more balance from the teams. Joyce opened things for CY Select with a transition hoop, and Mongan followed with a right wing three, ending the cold spell and making it 32-17.
The first Impact 2nd half score came via the transition game on a score from Kelley and was quickly followed by another Kelley score, on a basket cut with the feed from Gopalan. A free throw line jumper by Joyce and a free throw out of Paige Noe left things at 36-20.
A three from Impact grew the lead, but Aaliyah Riley cut it back to 39-22 with a drive into heavy contact. Kelley, who scored 9 of her 13 in the 2nd half, converted an and 1 ballooning the lead to 42-22.
Joyce, a Truman State commit, would spark another smaller run for CY Select, kicking it off with a baseline drive. Kelley responded with a wing drive, before Joyce buried another three, off the left wing, one of four for her in the game. After Impact got a bucket making it 46-27, Joyce again delivered from the left wing arc, and tacked on another drive off the baseline giving her 10 straight points for CY Select and making it 46-32.
Retherford, added to the roster as injury insurance, had a reverse lay-up and 1 finish late, followed by a middle drive from strong 2024 prospect Riley of CY Select. The teams would trade twos to end the game at 51-36. A long drive from Gopalan for Impact and an inside finish by Lily Beall of CY Select.
Lauren Capstran, Wisconsin Impact 2024 Kelley
-Capstran stepped into a much more prominent role as the weekend went on, and Impact found themselves more and more depleted with injuries. Had a very productive game with a 9 point/7 rebound effort. All her scoring was in the 1st half as Impact blew the game open early. She connected off the wing from three, and scored twice inside, once in transition. Averaged 9 PPG during Sophomore campaign at Franklin. Lost part of a tooth during the weekend, but it didn't keep her out of any games, but she was sporting a new mouth guard. Toughness on both ends of the floor.
Gracie Gopalan, Wisconsin Impact 2024 Kelley
-One of the best players during the course of the weekend, Gopalan had a 12 point/3 rebound outing versus CY Select Wolves 2023. Don't let her size fool you, she is tough and willing to drive into the lane and create for herself or kick-out to shooters. Scholarship talent who can handle the rock, shoots it well, and can attack off the bounce. Highly skilled lead Guard. Averaged 8 PPG as Sophomore for Waupun and should see larger role in her Junior campaign. Wherever she ends up, she is going to reward that coach with her ability to facilitate from the half-court or in transition attack.
Molly Joyce, CY Select Wolves 2023
-Joyce, among the top catch and shoot Guards in the region recently verballed to play her college basketball at Truman State. Finished with game-high 21 points, connecting four times from the arc. As primary scorer over the weekend, she was able to elevate her game and look to attack more on drives and in the transition game. She gives her team positional versatility as she can handle the ball from the Point, but is even more dangerous when she gets to play off the ball and have more space to display her scoring prowess.
Shae Kelley, Wisconsin Impact 2024 Kelley
-Kelley is one of the highest IQ players I've evaluated this season. Makes great decisions and plays with intensity on both ends of the floor. Finished this game with team-best 13 points & added 5 boards. Has garnered a lot of recent Division II interest, but she could gain Division I interest with a good July or upcoming Junior season. 11 PPG as Sophomore at Brookfield East, a 25 win team. She has a wiry frame, but can attack you with drives using both hands effectively and has shooting touch in the mid-range and three point games.
Kennedy Retherford, Wisconsin Impact 2024 Kelley
-Retherford was a very pleasant surprise in this one. She usually plays on Wisconsin Impact's 2025 Bugajski team, but was added for this game because of 2024 Kelley's injury issues. She responded well, with an 8 point/5 rebound effort. She saw varsity minutes as a Freshman at big-school powerhouse Pewaukee. Drives the ball very well and can get to the paint consistently and doesn't shy away from contact. Bright future ahead as she projects out as a scholarship player. Has the ability to stretch the floor from the arc. More on her in an upcoming 2025 Bugajski post.
